| Shipper |
| This category indicates who is shipping the product. |
| Label |
| This will indicate under what label the product is being shipped. |
| Lot |
The lot number indicates the grower and/or field where the
product was harvested. This will be indicated on pallet tags and noted
on all of our inspections. |
| Package |
This indicates the pack type and head count. The pack
types for iceberg lettuce include: cello wrapped, liner palletized, and
naked. Head counts will be 24, 30, and 38. |
| Size: This indicates the size of the heads. Our grades are as follows: |
Small (Sm): 4 in diameter
Small/Medium (Sm/Med): 4-5 in. diameter
Medium (Med): 5-6 in. diameter,
Medium/Large (Med/Lg): 6-8 in diameter
Large (LG): 8+ in. diameter |
Color: We use different shades of green to describe the color.
Descriptions are as follows: |
Pale Green (Ple)
Light Green (Lght)
Medium Green (Med)
Dark Green (Drk) |
Texture: This grade is based on the ideal texture of iceberg
lettuce which is crisp and crunchy. Grades are as follows: |
Poor (P)
Fair (F)
Fairly Good (FG)
Good (Gd)
Very Good (VG) |
| Appearance: The appearance grade is determined by the initial
opening of the box. A near-perfect appearance score will include clean
heads of uniform size and color. No obvious defects are visible and the
head sizing is not over or under sized, depending on overall counts. Any
visibly misshapen or wild heads and mud or dirt present will impact this
score. Our grades will represent how closely the box conforms to these
criteria. Appearance grades are as follows: |
10- Excellent
9- Very Good
8-Good
7-Fairly Good
6-Fair
5 and below- Poor |
| Pack: The pack grade is based on the performance of the field
crew harvesting the product. The ideal pack should possess a nice grid
pattern with proper size uniformity, sufficient number of protective
wrapper leaves, and free of any foreign materials. Some factors that
will be taken into account when determining the pack grade include:
Bruising, irregular sizing, poor trim, over/under packs, dirt, mud, and
any other foreign substances in or on the box. Pack grades are as follows: |
10-Excellent
9- Very Good
8- Good
7- Fairly Good
6-Fair
5 and below- Poor |
| Solidity |
| The solidity is described as follows: |
| Hard: Solid & compact. Does not yield to when pressure is applied. |
| Firm: Compact but yields slightly to moderate pressure. |
| Fairly Firm: Yields to pressure, but not to the point of being spongy. |
| Soft: Easily compressed, spongy. |
| Condition |
The condition grade is based on strength of commodity and
represents how far we recommend shipping the product. As shown on our commodity strength map, the higher numbers correspond with points closer
to the east coast, while the lower numbers correspond with more local
markets. We take into account the present state of the product as well
as any defects that will be adversely affected during the cooling and
shipping processes. This grade is made under the assumption that the
product will be cooled, stored, and transported under ideal conditions
and temperatures.
See commodity strength map for recommended shipping points. |
